There are two mobile phone operators active in Angola: Portugal Telecom's Unitel unit, and state-owned Angola Telecom.

Angola Telecom's (AT) in 2012 was undergoing a restructuring process to recover its financial position, as its 2009 accounts showed a high indebtedness. AT's mobile unit Movicel launched its GSM network in November 2010, and intended to invest some USD 1 billion on upgrading its network over the next four years. Movicel has migrated from its original CDMA network, as it had concluded that the CDMA network had a number of limitations which had constrained its market growth.

In its 1H 2012 results call, PT said it was 'very impressed and very happy' with the performance of Unitel. It claimed that the management team was doing a 'remarkable job', taking advantage of the growth opportunities in a market which is not only growing economically, but also has significant future potential growth.
