Algeria has three mobile operators. The largest mobile operator by subscriber numbers is Djezzy: owned by Eyptian-group Orascom Telecom Holding (OTH), the Algerian government has initiated steps to acquire a controlling interest. OTH has merged with VimpelCom, who in turn have issued a formal Notice of Arbitration against the Algerian State in April 2012.

Meanwhile rival mobile operator Wataniya - which operates as Nedjma - has also run into a spot of local difficulty with the government after Qatar Telecom (Qtel) announced it will go ahead with a plan to totally acquire the Kuwait group. Qtel received approval from Kuwait's Capital Markets Authority to buy the remaining 47.5 percent stake in Wataniya for USD 2.2 billion. It already owns 52.5 percent of the company.

Also active in the mobile market is state-owned operator Algerie Telecom which offers both mobile and fixed telephony.
