The population in the African continent was approximately 890 million people at the end of 2005. About 350 million of them live in the countries that have been covered in this report. For the remaining 540 million people, there are a number of other significant mobile markets in the region, as listed below in table 1.

Algeria

With a population of 33 million people, Algeria has witnessed rapid growth in its mobile market recently. Subscriber numbers have risen from a little over 1 million at the end of 2003, to approximately 5 million at the end of 2004 and over 12 million by the end of 2005.
