Asia Netcom Signs Agreement With VADS To Extend Malaysian Connectivity

Press Release
News Article  November 2006

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Nov. 9 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Asia Netcom today announced that it has signed an agreement with VADS Berhad, a KLSE mainboard- listed managed local services provider, to extend its domestic connectivity options into Malaysia.

According to Malaysia's Multimedia Development Corporation, the Malaysian economy achieved average annual growth rates of about 7% in the previous decade, while GDP doubled to reach an estimated RM219.4 billion (US$57.7 billion) in 2002. Exports and imports have almost quadrupled to reach RM349.6 billion (US$92.0 billion) and RM298.5 billion (US$78.6 billion) respectively, placing Malaysia among the world's top 20 trading nations.

The manufacturing sector today accounts for 30.4% of Malaysia's GDP, while exports of manufactured goods make up 86.5% of the country's total exports. From being the world's largest producer of rubber and tin, Malaysia is today one of the world's leading exporters of semiconductor devices, computer hard disk drives, audio and video products, and room air-conditioners.

"This deal is significant in enhancing Asia Netcom's local loop access capability in Malaysia," said Mark Simpson, COO, Asia Netcom. "This agreement reinforces our pedigree as Malaysia's leading ICT managed services provider, strengthened by unparalleled regional connectivity through Asia Netcom's infrastructure," said Dennis Koh, CEO, VADS. "It will boost our competitiveness in the market."

Added Chris van Zinnicq Bergmann, managing director, Southeast Asia and India, Asia Netcom, "As a customer-focused company, this agreement now reinforces our services in a key Asian market, and provides our customers with even more options to meet their bandwidth needs."
