Middle East and Africa take 17% of global net additions
Africa accounted for 12 percent of global mobile net additions in 1Q 2010, adding 20.1 million new subscribers to the world population of mobile users, and giving Africa a total of 480.2 million subscribers. This is a rather neat 10.0 percent of the some 4.82 billion mobile subscribers estimated to exist at the end of March 2010.
By comparison the Middle East accounted for 5 percent of global mobile net additions, clocking up some 8.1 million in the first quarter. Together Africa & the Middle East therefore accounted for 17 percent of global net additions.
According to research by The Mobile World, 1Q 2010 saw net additions of 168 million, taking the total to 4.82 billion. China and India remain the world's largest, and accounted for almost 28 percent of the global total at the end of 1Q 2010, but their contribution to the net quarterly gain in connections was double this at 56 percent. The USA accounts for 3 percent of net additions: the same percentage as Brazil and Russia combined.
With the world population at around 6.8 billion, the global mobile penetration rate stood at just under 71 percent at the end of Q1 2010. Africa, by comparison, had a mobile penetration of 47 percent, whilst the Middle East hit 86 percent.

In the last twenty years, few industries have grown as fast as the worldwide mobile market. Having recorded a staggering 3.9 billion subscriber additions between end-2000 and end-2009 - a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23.3 percent - the worldwide mobile subscriber base is forecast to increase from 4.6 billion at end-2009 to 7.5 billion by end-2020.
This subscriber growth has propelled worldwide mobile penetration from 11.5 percent in 2000 to pass 64 percent by end-2009; by end-2020 it will touch 94 percent.
Up until 2000, Europe dominated the worldwide mobile market (in terms of subscriber numbers), but shortly thereafter Asia Pacific replaced Europe as the world leader and has continued to remain so in terms of subscriber base - even though Africa and Middle East is currently adding mobile subscribers to the worldwide base faster than any other region.
Since their 1992 launch, mobile value added services (VAS) - a key component of mobile services worldwide - have evolved from simple texting (SMS) to advanced functions such as mobile entertainment, payments, location-based services, e-mail and instant messaging (IM). Despite this evolution, Portio Research in a recent study notes that SMS remains the most popular mobile VAS offering in almost all mobile markets in the world.
In 2000, 303 million mobile handsets were shipped at a worldwide level; this figure will approach 1.5 billion by end-2014. Smartphones, with their myriad features and functions, are increasingly gaining prominence in the worldwide handset market.
All this...and more...is explored and explained in Portio Research's 'Worldwide Mobile Market Growth 2000-2020' which provides a comprehensive review of the global mobile industry. In outline it contains:
